IPL 2022 PREVIEW

Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and five-time champions, have lost both their opening matches. If the team is to open their account in the current season, then its bowlers will have to give their best in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday. Mumbai were defeated by Delhi Capitals by four wickets in the first match while Rajasthan Royals by 23 runs in the second match.

Captain Rohit Sharma would like to improve in several areas to register a win against KKR. KKR will enter this match with a boost of morale after registering a six-wicket win over Punjab Kings. Fast bowler Basil Thampi and spinner Murugan Ashwin proved to be weak links for Mumbai in the last match against Rajasthan. Thampi had conceded 26 runs in one over and Ashwin had conceded 32 runs in three overs.

Australia’s fast bowler Daniel Sams has also conceded runs in the last two matches and failed to take wickets. All three will have to bowl with the right line and length to curb the KKR batsmen. Jasprit Bumrah though has shown why he is counted among the best bowlers in the world but he is not getting enough support from the other end.

Rohit will also have to play big innings again against his favorite opponent to get a favorable result. Opener Ishan Kishan, however, has done well so far. He scored 81 runs in the first match and 54 runs in the second match. If Mumbai wants to score big then Rohit and Kishan will have to get them off to a good start. Mumbai are sorely missing Suryakumar Yadav, who missed the first two matches due to a finger injury.

There is still uncertainty about whether he will be available for this match. Apart from this, Anmolpreet Singh, Tim David and Kieron Pollard will also have to play their part well. It remains to be seen whether Mumbai gives a chance to the young South African player and Baby de Villiers, Dewald Brevis. As far as KKR is concerned, the most positive aspect for them is star all-rounder Andre Russell’s return to form.

Against Punjab Kings, Russell had given the team victory on his own while raining sixes. Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer at the top of the order were not able to walk in the last match. Both of them would like to give a good start to the team. Captain Shreyas Iyer is off to a good start but needs a bigger innings from him. The same applies to Sam Billings and Nitish Rana.
